La prépondérance de la mère dans le soin et l’éducation du bébé est longtemps apparue comme une donnée de nature, que les travaux psychologiques venaient étayer et renforcer. Mais l’évolution parallèle des moeurs et des théories ont permis de remettre en cause une telle évidence. L’étude de l’évolution des savoirs sur la petite enfance montre que l’on est passé d’un modèle familial organiciste dominant, selon lequel la nature détermine le rôle de chacun, à un modèle beaucoup plus ouvert à l’influence de la société sur les conduites. Notre travail retrace la complexité d’une évolution qui, de nos jours, reste controversée, et en rappelle les enjeux, en ces temps de mise en avant de la parentalité.The preponderance of the mother in the care and the education of babies has long been seemed as a natural datum, which works in psychology came to support and reinforce. The study of the evolution of knowledge on early childhood shows that we have evolved from a dominant organicist model of the family, according to which nature determines each the role of everyone, to a model much more opened to the influence of society on behaviours. This paper redraws the complexity of an evolution which, nowadays, remains controversial and recalls what is actually at stake at a time where the concept of parentality is taking the forefront
