Le triptyque : francophone, anglophone et allophone traverse nombre de discours populaires et d’écrits universitaires qui renvoient à la composition démographique du Québec. En fait, ces trois qualificatifs tiennent lieu de catégorisation identitaire de la société québécoise. Par eux chaque membre de cette société se voit assigné une identité qui le définit par rapport au reste des résidents du Québec. L’étude que voici interroge les modalités d’assignation de cette identité ainsi que sa réception. En se focalisant sur le label de francophone, elle rend compte de la discordance dans l’entendement de ce qualificatif entre les intellectuels originaires de l’Afrique subsaharienne et le groupe démographique dominant au Québec. Ce faisant, elle met à nu la dimension conflictuelle et l’enjeu social qui se dégagent de l’usage de cet attribut identitaire.The trio francophone, anglophone, allophone is often used in popular discourse and in academic writings referring to the demographic composition of Québec. Indeed, these three labels serve as a framework of identity categorization in Québec society. Through them, each member of this society is assigned a defining identity in relation to other Québec residents. This paper examines the ways in which this identity is assigned, and how it is received. By focusing on the label francophone, it brings to light the lack of concordance between the meaning given to this label by intellectuals originating from sub-Saharan Africa, and that used by the dominant demographic group in Québec. In so doing, it exposes the conflictual dimension and the social issue arising out of this identity label
