107 RÉSUMÉ / SUMMARYUne industrie avant l'industrialisation : le cas des Forges du Saint-MauriceL'auteur propose de relier l'expérience des Forges du Saint-Maurice (Québec, Canada, 1730-1883) à la problématique de la protoindustrialisation. Il résume d'abord les conditions de la protoindustrialisation et s'interroge sur la validité du modèle en milieu colonial. Il examine ensuite les rapports de production actualisés par l'entreprise et voit dans l'emploi d'ouvriers • externes ", paysans non spécialisés, et < internes ", les métallurgistes, l'illustration de la double articulation caractéristique d'une situation protoindustrielle : agriculture et industrie, famille et travail. Il discute ensuite de la dynamique paternaliste comme mode de transmission du savoir et mode de gestion, en insistant sur les tensions qu'il ne doit pas camoufler. Il observe enfin les signes d'une transition vers la prolétarisation des ouvriers dans le premier quart du 19e siècle.A Pre-lndustrialization Industry :The Case of the Forges du Saint-MauriceThe author undertakes to confront the story of Quebec's St. Maurice Ironworks, in 1730 to 1883 Canada, with the question of proto-industrialization. He first outlines the constants of this stage and inquires as to the applicability of such a model in a colonial setting. He then presents the firm's output record, citing the use of " outside " workers (unspe-cialized peasants) and " in-house " employees (ironsmiths) as an example of the twin pairs typical of the proto-industrial context : agriculture and industry, family and work. Next he examines the paternalist dynamic as a vehicle for transfer of konwhow and as management form, calling attention to certain strains he cannot blink. Lastly he notes indications for transition toward worker proletarization in the opening quarter of the nineteenth century
