Déficience et handicap sont les deux faces d'une même réalité. L'auteur appelle conventionnellement/¡ancftcap l'ensemble des rôles sociaux interdits à un individu en raison d'une déficience. Le handicap peut être réduit par une action sur l'individu, visant à diminuer sa déficience, et/ou par une action en direction de la société. Prenant l'exemple des sourds, l'auteur montre en quoi une action centrée sur la déficience peut avoir pour conséquence d'augmenter le handicap et se révéler synonyme d'intolérance.Deficiency and handicap are two facets of the same reality. The author defines handicap conventionally as the collection of social roles prevented an individual because of a deficiency. A handicap may be reduced by the individual himself aspiring to diminish his deficiency, and/or by procedures carried out by society. Taking the example of the deaf, the author demonstrates how an action concentrated upon the deficiency can have the consequence of increasing the handicap, and in so doing reveals itself a synonym of intolerance.Deficiencia y desventaja son las dos faces de una misma realidad. El autor define convencionalmente la desventaja como el conjunto de roles sociales prohibidos a un individuo a causa de una deficiencia. La desventaja puede ser reducida gracias a una acción sobre el individuo que trata de disminuir su deficiencia y/e con una acción hacia la sociedad. El autor toma como ejemplo a los sordos y muestra cómo una acción centrada sobre la deficiencia puede tener como consecuencia la aumentación de la desventaja además, de revelarse como sinónimo de intolerancia
