En dépit de l'antagonisme de Gurvitch à l'égard de Parsons, ces deux auteurs ont des points communs qui les ont d'ailleurs exposés à des critiques semblables. Leur ambition théorique était la construction d'une macrothéorie dépourvue de tout monisme causal. Leur stratégie d'analyse se fondait sur la référence à la totalité, s'établissant chez Gurvitch sur la notion de phénomène social total, chez Parsons sur le concept de système social. Their ambition in the realm of theory was the construction of a macro-theory free from all causal monism. Their analytical strategy was founded on the reference to the whole, taking the form of the total social phenomenon in Gurvitch, and the concept of social system in Parsons. Unlike Gurvitch, Parsons accepts model building as a process for reducing complexity. This is responsible for all the difference between Gurvitch's "in-depth layers" and Parsons' ÁGIL scheme, even though correspondances do exist between these two analytical instruments. For Gurvitch, creating reciprocity between viewpoints is a process of dialectization leading to functional correlations. The ÁGIL outline can be considered a handy tool for creating reciprocal relationships between different viewpoints.A pesar del antagonismo de Gurvitch hacia Parsons, estos dos autores presentan puntos en común que por otra parte los han expuesto a críticas parecidas. La ambición teórica de ambos era la construcción de una macro-teorfa desprovista de todo monismo causal. Su estrategia de análisis se fundaba en la referencia a la totalidad, estableciéndose en Gurvitch en la noción de fenómeno social total, en Parsons sobre el concepto de sistema social.
