Au Québec, la migration croissante de musulmans donne à voir un islam pluriel.Néanmoins, depuis septembre 2001, la question identitaire se pose avec plus d’acuitépour les musulmans d’Amérique du Nord. Ce contexte couplé au maintien quotidien deliens hors du territoire local et à l’avènement de nouveaux acteurs internationauxfavorisent un sentiment d’appartenir à une oumma universelle, appartenance non pour autant détachée d’unrapport au territoire local ou d’origine. À partir d’une recherche sur les pratiquessociales et rituelles de musulmans Libanais, Ouest-Africains et Maghrébins deMontréal, nous argumentons que la sociabilité de ces populations s’articule entrereligion, ethnicité et culture. En examinant les pratiques communautaires ainsi queles dynamiques de transmission identitaire aux enfants et de définition desfrontières symboliques des groupes, nous exposons la diversité des stratégiesidentitaires et réfutons la présence d’un islam essentialisé en contextemontréalais.In Quebec, the increasing number of Muslim migrants provides a plural image ofIslam. Nonetheless, since September, 2001, the question of identity has become apressing one for Muslims in North America. This context, together with the dailymaintenance of extra-local relations and the advent of new internationalactors, promote feelings of belongingto a universal oumma, a belonging, however,not detached from relations with the local or native territory. Drawing on a studyof social and ritual practices of Lebanese, West African, and North African migrantsin Montreal, we argue that the sociality of Muslim populations in Quebec is locatedat the intersection of religion, ethnicity, and culture. By examining communitypractices, the dynamics of identity transmission among children and that of symbolicgroup borders, we expose identity strategies’ diversity, and refute the presence ofan essentialized Islam in the Montreal context
