To adequately conduct such research requires sufficient local research capacity. However, despite greater health needs, usually lower-income settings have the least research capacity. Many barriers, such as underinvestment in universities and research centers and poor career prospects for researchers, prevent these places from achieving sufficient research potential to address their most pressing health problems [1]. Thus, research capacity strengthening is an essential goal for many lowand middle-income settings.
