従来, 姿勢の制御は反射機構によって行われていると考えられていた。ところが, 立位で可能な限り素早く上肢挙上運動を行うと, 動筋 (三角筋) のEMG活動の開始に先行して下肢の筋に筋活動が認められる.この動筋活動に先行する姿勢筋の活動は予測的姿勢調節活動 (anticipatory postural activity) と呼ばれ, 中枢プログラムによると考えられている.本研究の目的は, 顎機能運動時における予測的姿勢調節の有無を調べることにある.被験: 者に音刺激に可能な限り素早く反応して急速な開口運動を行わせ, 胸鎖乳突筋と顎二腹筋前腹の筋活動開始時期の比較を行った.すると, 胸鎖乳突筋は顎二腹筋前腹に先行して活動を開始する傾向を示した.また, 胸鎖乳突筋の活動潜時は反応時間と高い相関を示した.これらの結果は胸鎖乳突筋の活動が動筋活動によって誘発されたというよりはむしろ急速な随意開口運動の一構成要素であることを示唆するものである.
