In recent years, a new strengthening method of concrete structures with externally prestressed carbon fiber sheets (CFS) has been developed and the reinforcement effects are confirmed through a series of experimental investigations. However, the theoretically expected gains from CFS may not be attained due to its lower capacity of energy absorption. This study aims at confirming the reinforcement effects of strengthening system by adapting newly developed PBO (short for Polypara-phenylene-benzo-bis-oxazole) fiber sheets (PFS), which present equal or higher strength and stiffness in comparison with CFS and higher capacity of energy adsorption. Through investigating the reinforcement effects influenced by the main parameters such as the prestress levels, concrete compressive strength, the number of PFS, and comparing with those of CFS, it can be indicated that the prestressing system of PFS will be an effective and promising method to strengthen or upgrade concrete structures.
