The reaction of nickel pivalate Ni9(OH)6(Piv)12(HPiv)4 (Piv is anion of pivalic acid) and triethylenetetraamine (L1) (Ni : L1 = 1 : 1) in MeCN with following addition of isophthalaldehyde (L2, L1 : L2 = 1 : 1) results in the formation of Ni2L(Piv)4 (I), containing new macrocyclic ligand L3 formed as a result of [2+2] condensation of L1 with L2. The new compound was characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction and magnetic measurements.
