A series of f i r e tests w a s conducted f o r the Washington Metropolitan Area Trans i t Authority t o assist them i n assess ing t h e p o t e n t i a l f o r f i r e hazard i n t h e new Metrorai l subway ca rs . Resul ts of small-scale laboratory tests were found inadequate f o r t h i s assessment. Resul ts of f u l lsca l e tests on mock-ups of t h e i n t e r i o r (and on a real ca r f o r a smoke penetra t ion t e s t ) show t h a t t h e p o t e n t i a l f o r hazard arises pr imari ly from t h e s e a t padding and covering and from t h e p l a s t i c wal l l i n i n g . The hazard arises both from smoke development and from spread of flame and heat . The t i m e s t o reach unacceptable condit ions has been determined f o r s eve ra l tes t condit ions. It i s recommended t h a t t h e a u t h o r i t i e s review these times i n t h e context of what they consider t o be appropr ia te t i m e s f o r s a f e escape.
