It is shown that fixed low pressures of nitrogen in the vacuum region can be generated by chemical dissociation in a system at equilibrium at constant temperature. Dissociation pressures ranging from 2 × 10 -5 to 0.7 torr (3 × 10 -3 to 90 N · m  -2 ), corresponding to temperatures of 740 to 1150 K, for the reactionBa   3    N  2   ⇄   3  2Ba   2   N  +   1  4    N  2have been measured. The pressures, p , in N · m -2 are represented by the equation    ln   p  =   (   22.02  ±  0.14   )   -(   20  ,  080  ±  140   )    T   ,    where T is the absolute temperature, and the uncertainties are least squares estimates of the standard deviations of the parameters.
