Electron density profiles in the afterglow of a s tabilized linear pinch have been measured us ing the refractive properties of the plasma column. The de Aec tion a ngle of a mic rowave beam refrac ted by the di scharge is observed as a func tion of bea m position. The resulting data le'ld to an integra l equation fo r the e lec tron de nsity di s tribution, whi ch is reduc ible to the Abel integral equation. The e lectron de ns it y is de rived from the experim ental data by inverting thi s las t equation. The method has bee n checke d using direct transmiss ion and inte rferometric measure ments .
