A formal solu t ion is obtained for t he magnetic field produced by a vertical magneto­ static dipole which moves in free s pace at a co nstant velocity a long t he normal to a con­ ducting h a lf space . When t he velo city of t he dipole is much less t han t hat of li ght, t he fi eld in f ree space is governed by Laplace' s equation, a nd t hat in t he conducting half space by t he d iffu sion equation. An expression in closed form is derived for t he voltage induced in a s ma ll loop moving with t he dipole. For certain valu es of t he parameter s, simplified expressions a re obtain ed for t he induction. Numeri ca l resul ts are presented for certain cases.
