A descrip tion is give n of t hree digita l methods which have been used to reco ver a mplit ude and phase inform ation from a modula ted sinusoida l signal sa mpled at equ a l in te rvals of not more t ha n one-sixth of a period. The first method, t he "zero-crossing" method , is economi cal of co mputer t ime and, for modulation which is no t too deep a nd does not co ntain frequencies near the ca rrier frequ ency, accurately recovers t he phase a nd a mp li t ud e modulation . The seco nd method, t he " filter" method, is more la borious bu t it gives better accuracy a nd will operate wit h deeper and more rapid modu lation . The t hird method, a stat i t ical app roach, will work wi th se verly overmodulated s ignals, but it y ie lds only a stat ist ical sumlll a ry of t he modulat ion . The met hods were des ign ed specifi ca lly fo r a nalysis of r adio-s tar scin t ill at ion reco rds bu t t hey may be applied to many other lllodu lated signals.
