The corrections due to backscattering and film absorpt ion for radioactive sources in 4,,proportional fl ow coun ters have been investigated. The low-field effect arising from t he u se of thin , but nonconducting, Formvar-polystyrene films has also been investigated, and t he results have been compared with those obtained in experiments carried out with such supportin g film s reno ered condu cting by the evapora tion t hereon of an approximately 15-microgram-per-square-cen timeter layer of gold . Sandwiches of such conducting films have been Il sed to determine the absorption due to the supportin g fi lm. It has been sh own t hat t h e simpler nonconducting source-mounting fi lm technique may still be used to calibrate radioactive sources to " 'ithin the limits of accuracy cu rrently in demand.
