The number of skiers in Japan has decreased since 1993. At the same time, the number of junior skiers who engage in alpine competition has also diminished. When junior skiers graduate from elementary school or middle school, many of them stop participating in the activity. It is assumed that parents influence their children's decision to continue (Kato and Kobayashi 2006) . Thus, this study investigates the process by which parents make their decision to allow their children to continue alpine competition once they graduate from elementary school. Parents (N = 113), whose children participated in the alpine ski competition, completed a questionnaire that included measures of intentions for encouraging their children toward continuing alpine competitions after graduating from elementary school, and 3 factors, which were named benefits, goal setting, and enthusiasm, that affect the parents' intentions. Structural equation modeling using AMOS 5 was conducted to investigate the relationship between intentions and these factors. The analysis revealed that "benefits" and "goal setting" had a significant impact on intentions. Even though "enthusiasm" did not have a direct impact on intentions, it had an indirect impact on intentions through "benefits". Therefore, parents who acknowledge that participating in alpine competitions is beneficial for their children, and who set goals in terms of alpine completions for their children are likely to facilitate their children's participation in alpine ski competitions.
