It is preferable that the sampling period be lengthened as much as possible in order to obtain an accurate annual average for volatile organic compounds (VOCs). We evaluated a canister-based 1-week sampling method for the long-term measurement of 48 VOCs including 9 priority chemicals. Under various weather conditions, 1-week sampling was carried out for 7 times and these data were compared with the conventional 24-hour sampling method. We obtained a total of 255 data through our study, and 236 of 255 (93 %) data obtained by the 1week method were close to the mean values calculated from the 24-hour method (<30 % deviation). For freon and aliphatic halocarbons, the concentration deviation between the two sampling methods was very small, while they were comparatively greater for unsaturated hydrocarbons and aromatic hydrocarbons with the substituent. This may be because these high reactivity compounds interact differently with individual canister. A 1week sampling method is useful in obtaining accurate annual mean concentration of VOCs in ambient air, if quality control of the entire method, including the management of canisters, is assured.
