Large, vigorous, isolated ponderosa pines were the best cone producers in terms of seed quantity, quality, and frequency of bearing in the Southwest. Large cone crops occurred in 3 years out of 10. Trees 28 to 40 inches in diameter averaged 218 to 446 cones each per year. In contrast, trees 12 to 20 inches in diameter averaged less than 22 cones. The largest crop produced was 7,521 cones per acre in 1960, when 59 percent of the trees bore more than 100 cones each. Abert squirrels reduced the 10-year cone production by one-fifth. Coneletbearing twigs clipped by squirrels provide a basis for predicting cone crop size.
