: Periodic inspection of undersea pipelines and offshore structures requires depth capabilities in excess of those which are economical with divers (ie, 100 meters). Free-swimming, unmanned undersea vehicles operating in the supervisory-controlled mode (ie, man-in-the-loop) are being considered as a possible solution to the deep, undersea inspection problem. Specifically, an expendable optical fiber data link is proposed as a means to provide the wide-bandwidth, high-quality, bidirectional communications essential to advanced-sensor/real-time man-in-the-loop capabilities of such inspection vehicles.
