Equipado con abundante terminologia filosofica y basado en una reveladora recension de Richard Canning, el presente articulo propone una nueva lectura de The Blackwater Lightship de Colm Toibin, orientada a arrojar luz sobre la compleja caracterizacion de Helen O’Doherty con el respaldo teorico de lo que se conoce genericamente como existencialismo. Martin Heidegger, Karl Jaspers, Jean Paul Sartre, Gabriel Marcel y otros pensadores contemporaneos —vinculados de una forma u otra con las escuelas y tradiciones existencialistas— se reunen en este estudio y se reinterpretan en dialogo directo con la novela en cuestion con el proposito ultimo de aplicar nociones tan esclarecedoras como Geworfenheit, Sein-zum-Tode, situacion limite, mala fe o misterio a los problemas y desafios que arrostra Helen ante la inminente muerte de su hermano. Los resultados de dicho dialogo revelan que The Blackwater Lightship constituye una novela profundamente existencialista. Equipped with dense philosophical terminology and based on an insightful review by Richard Canning, this article proposes a new reading of Colm Toibin’s The Blackwater Lightship, meant to shed some light on the complex portrayal of Helen O’Doherty with the theoretical help of what is broadly known as existentialism. Martin Heidegger, Karl Jaspers, Jean Paul Sartre, Gabriel Marcel and other contemporary philosophers —associated in one way or another with the existentialist schools and traditions— are all invoked and reinterpreted in direct dialogue with the novel under consideration for the sole purpose of applying such elucidative notions as Geworfenheit, Sein-zum-Tode, limit situation, bad faith or mystery to the quandaries and challenges that Helen encounters in the face of her brother’s imminent death. The outcomes of such a dialogue reveal that The Blackwater Lightship constitutes a profoundly existential novel.
