Corruption is one of the most alarming social problems in Serbia and the corruption public healthcare system is so deeply rooted in the ethos that it has almost become commonplace and something that goes without saying. Surveys have indicated that citizens perceive the healthcare system as one of the most corrupted segments of society; not only that, but this perception exceeds the actual degree of corruption. The scale of corruption in the healthcare system seriously undermines reputation of the profession, impacting adversely on establishing a relationship of trust between the doctor and the patient which is critical for a successful treatment. This paper provides an overview of the problem of corruption in the healthcare system in Serbia as well as measures taken to curb the phenomenon.
