Background. The major osteoporotic fractures have a detrimental impact on the health and quality of life for patients older than 65 years and are very expensive to treat. Screening and identification of those patients at risk for osteoporotic fractures would mean substantial progress in preventing them. The aim of our study was to evaluate the risk of osteoporotic fractures in our female patients. Methods. The study involved 23 women aged 65 years and older with one or more clinical risk factors for osteoporosis. A ten-year assessment of the risks of major osteoporotic fracture was performed through the Fracture Risk Assessment (FRAXR) algorithm, a clinical instrument defined by the Center for metabolic bone disease of the World Health Organisation. The anthropometric characteristics of female patients were analyzed by descriptive statistics using the computer program for statistical analysis (SPSS , version 20). Results. A ten-year assessment of the risks of osteoporotic fractures in the tested patients showed that the vast majority of subjects had intermediate (47,8%) or high (47,8%) risk of fractures. Only one patient (4,4%) had low ten-year risk of osteoporotic fractures. Conclusion. The risk assessment for osteoporosis at the primary health care is very important in identifying patients at risk for osteoporotic fractures. Our results suggest the efficacy and cost effectiveness of screening programs in osteoporosis, which could be implemented in daily practice.
