The study in front of you should throw a more clear light to semi-darkness in which was the history of culture at the end of the 19th and beginning of 20th century through searching for the legacy of Karlo Macejka who was an extraordinary intellectual of Czech origin spending almost a half of his working life in Pirot establishing the stage for choir singing and music in a small oriental town. Identifying the cultural influence of Karlo Macejka, this study can be seen also as opening of one wider and more complex topic which would deal with destinies and creative work of dozens of Czech people who came to Pirot before the First World War, leaving visible marks of their work. From this point of view, the study can be considered also as a potential contribution to the history of Czech people in Pirot.
