Many factors influence the choice and frequency of use of strategies for learning a foreign language, among others there is the factor of the students' age. The paper presents the results of a research aimed at establishing to which extent and which types of strategies are used by elementary-school pupils aged 10 - 14. A standardized Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) was used. The analysis focused on finding out the strategies and groups of strategies most commonly used and those which are the least used in a certain age group. The results show that elementary-school students more frequently use indirect strategies when learning a foreign language but, also, that there are certain differences in selection and frequency of use between the examined groups, which may be assigned to the age factor. The conclusions, given in this article, could be used as guidelines for further development of strategic competence of elementary-school students and indicate groups of strategies which are underdeveloped
