The right of workers to form\udand to join trade unions is one of the most\udimportant international labour standards. This\udmeans that employees, no matter where they are\udemployed (public or private sector), have the right\udto form their own organizations (unions). Apart\udfrom the employees, employers also have the right\udto form and join in employers’ associations. The\udright of employees and employers to organize is\udbased on the following principles: voluntariness,\udautonomy and democracy. The general objective of\udthe formation of unions and employers’\udassociations is to protect the rights and interests of\udmembers of the union and the employers’\udassociation, as well as their promotion in an\udorganized manner. The provision and guarantee of\udunion and workers' rights are guaranteed by a\udnumber of international and regional legal\udinstruments (conventions, recommendations,\udregulations), such as ILO, UN, Council of Europe\udand the European Union, which will be analysed\udfurther in this paper. The main objective arising\udfrom these documents is to improve the position of\udworkers and their protection.\ud Within the paper, we will also analyse the\udmost important legal acts of the Republic of\udMacedonia concerning the right to join unions. By\udanalysing the content of the national labour\udlegislation, we will determine the extent to which\udthe international labour law is being implemented.\ud Moreover, the paper will analyse the basic\udprinciples underlying union organization and\udassociation
