Natural gas storage in geological structures or in cryogenic tanks of liquefaction or liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification terminals is very relevant in several countries where gas plays an important role in their economies. For countries without storage facilities like Brazil, it is decisive observing the vast international experience in this area in order to plan the development of their natural gas sectors. Hence, the objective of this work was to identify, through linear regressions, the existing correlations between the gas storage capacity of countries with storage facilities and some of their gas sector’s characteristics, like volumes of reserves, production and consumption, among others. The results indicated, for cryogenic storage of LNG, higher correlation with volumes of proved reserves for liquefaction terminals, and higher correlation with volumes of imported gas for regasification terminals. For geological storage capacity, very strong correlations were identified with natural gas consumption and with the stage of development of the gas infrastructure. It was also verified weak correlation between storage capacity and the existence of natural gas in excess within the country.
