As intensas emissoes de gases de efeito estufa (GEE) para atmosfera, incluindo o Dioxido de Carbono (CO 2 ), causadas na maioria das vezes pela acao antropica, passaram a ser o principal motivo da aceleracao das mudancas climaticas. As areas de preservacao permanente (APPs) de recursos hidricos tem como funcao primordial proteger os corpos d’agua e contribuir para a biodiversidadea Alem disso, a vegetacao presente nestas areas contribui para minimizar o efeito estufa atraves do sequestro de carbono (CO 2 ) que promove. Desse modo, tornaram-se alvo de grande preocupacao no sentido da sua conservacao e recuperacao. Sendo assim, este trabalho visou diagnosticar a degradacao das APPs de uma bacia hidrografica urbana do municipio de Passos-MG e estimar o potencial de sequestro de carbono atraves da sua recuperacao. Foram utilizadas imagens de satelite, tecnicas de geoprocessamento e sensoriamento remoto, trabalhos em campo e laboratorio. Foram identificados os niveis de degradacao das APPs e fez-se a estimativa do estoque de carbono presente na biomassa arborea viva, biomassa arbustiva e herbacea e serapilheira em uma area representativa, selecionada para a amostragem. Os resultados foram extrapolados e pode-se determinar qual a contribuicao, em termos de estoque de carbono de biomassa sequestrado, que a restauracao florestal das areas degradadas pode trazer para area de estudo.O carbono sequestrado em biomassa vegetal pode ser uma alternativa para a obtencao de creditos de carbono do Mecanismo de Desenvolvimento Limpo, preconizados no Protocolo de Kyoto. Abstract The intense emission of greenhouse gases (GHG) into the atmosphere, including carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), caused mostly by human activities, have become the main reason for the acceleration of climate change. The permanent preservation areas (APPs) of water resources has the primary duty to protect the water bodies and contribute to biodiversity, in addition, this vegetation in these areas contribute to minimize global warming through carbon sequestration (CO 2 ) that promote. Thus, become the subject of great concern towards their conservation and recovery. Thus, this study aimed to diagnose the degradation of APPs of an urban watershed in the city of Passos-MG, and estimate the potential of carbon sequestration through recovery. Satellite images were used, GIS techniques and remote sensing, field and laboratory work. The degradation of APPs levels were identified and made to estimate the stock of carbon in the living biomass tree, shrub and herbaceous biomass and litter in a representative area selected for sampling. The results were extrapolated and can determine what contribution in terms of stock kidnapped biomass carbon that forest restoration of degraded areas can bring to the study area. The carbon sequestered in plant biomass can be an alternative for obtaining carbon credits from the Clean Development Mechanism, envisaged in the Kyoto Protocol.
