The present article will evaluate, in the scope of water absorption, the addition of sugar in the mortar mixture. This type of empirical technique is commonly used in the northeast of the country, and performs well, according to who uses it. In the construction market there is a range of additives that are used to alter certain characteristics of the mortar and concrete in order to optimize them. Empirically, refined sugar is used as a water-repellent handle retarder, as well as in structures with high temperature incidence. Therefore, it was perceived the need to verify the performance of this mixture with according to current norms, so that it has scientific support in the latter's employment. At the beginning pilot tests were performed, not standardized to test the limits of this addition, amplifying the infra mentioned effects. Subsequently, tests, based on ABNT standards, show that the use of sugar in the mortar mixture increases capillary absorption, rather than reducing it, and equates to sugar-free test specimens when the immersion test is performed. It was also observed that this addition improves the workability, delays the handle, however, it weakens the part reducing its abrasive resistance. Nevertheless, it was observed, with support in the tests carried out, that the addition of sugar is inefficient in inhibiting the infiltration of water and the benefits achieved do not supplant the lack of effectiveness of this technique. It is not known, therefore, if these results are influenced by the climate of the region, recommending further studies of the problem.
