Células a combustível do tipo “Proton Exchange Membrane” (PEM) convertem a energia química do hidrogênio em energia elétrica. Um dos desafios para o desenvolvimento desta tecnologia é a sensibilidade dos eletrocatalisadores de Pt da célula PEM frente ao CO (contaminante do hidrogênio gerado nas reações de reforma a vapor). Neste trabalho foram sintetizados catalisadores à base de Ni, Zr e Si por diferentes métodos. Os materiais oxidados foram caracterizados pelas técnicas de fisissorção de N2, difração de raios X (DRX), reação de desidrogenação do cicloexano, espectrometria de infravermelho com transformada de Fourier (FTIR) e redução à temperatura programada (TPR). Foram realizados testes catalíticos de metanação do CO e as taxas de reação foram calculadas para a seleção do catalisador mais ativo nesta reação. Os catalisadores suportados foram os mais ativos na metanação do CO. Dentre todos, o Ni/ZrO2 foi 20 vezes mais ativo do que o catalisador de referência (Ni/SiO2). Foi observado que a área metálica disponível não é o fator chave para justificar o melhor desempenho catalítico do Ni/ZrO2. DOI: 10.5935/1984-6835.20150067Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEM) converts the chemical energy of hydrogen, into electricity. One of the challenges for development of this technology is the sensitivity of the PEM cell’s Pt electrocatalysts when exposed to CO (contaminant of the hydrogen generated in steam reforming reactions). In this work, catalysts based on Ni, Zr and Si were synthesized by different methods. The oxidized materials were characterized by N2 physisorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), cyclohexane dehydrogenation reaction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Temperature Programmed Reduction (TPR). Moreover, tests of CO methanation were performed and reaction rates were calculated for the selection of the most active catalyst in this reaction. The supported catalysts were the most active in CO methanation. Among all the Ni/ZrO2 was 20 times more active than the reference catalyst (Ni/SiO2). It was observed that the metal area available is not the key factor to justify the best catalytic performance Ni/ZrO2. DOI: 10.5935/1984-6835.2015006
