 As it stands today, acidity and basicity are chemical concepts of broad scope and applicability. However, for a long time, both properties remain mysterious and misunderstood as a concept, although being relatively well known facing their sensory nature. Over the centuries, the acidity and basicity properties were finally associated with two well defined chemical groups - acids and bases. In more recent times, these concepts were relativized. This article aims to present some historical and unusual aspects of this topic. DOI: 10.5935/1984-6835.20150046Conforme se apresenta hoje, acidez e basicidade são conceitos químicos de grande abrangência e aplicabilidade. No entanto, por muito tempo, ambas as propriedades permaneceram misteriosas e mal compreendidas enquanto conceito, apesar de relativamente bem conhecidas dada a sua natureza sensorial. Ao longo dos séculos, as propriedades acidez e basicidade foram finalmente associadas a duas classes de substâncias químicas bem definidas - ácidos e bases.
