Biomarcadores geoquímicos e composição elementar foram avaliados em amostras de sedimentos para determinar as fontes de matéria orgânica (MO) em um ambiente anóxico da Lagoa da Conceição, em Santa Catarina. Um testemunho sedimentar (54 cm) foi coletado no ponto representativo da região anóxica e analisado, após o fracionamento e derivatização quando necessário, por cromatografia a gás com detector por ionização em chama (CG-DIC) e espectrometria de massas (CG-EM). Biomarcadores geoquímicos como hidrocarbonetos, álcoois e esteróis foram detectados nas frações ao longo do testemunho. A razão atômica C/N associada à distribuição dos homólogos para cada classe de biomarcadores permitiu inferir que a MO sedimentar extraível com solventes é proveniente de plantas terrestres, bactérias e, principalmente, algas. A partir da análise de agrupamento hierárquico, foi possível agrupar as frações do perfil sedimentar quanto ao efeito do processo de eutrofização e a mudança das fontes de MO nos diversos intervalos de profundidade do testemunho. Os resultados obtidos por meio da datação geocronológica com o radionuclídio 210Pb confirmaram que a maior proporção de biomarcadores autóctones em profundidades maiores está relacionada com a maior produtividade que o ambiente apresentou no passado e não com a maior taxa de sedimentação/preservação. Ainda, os resultados obtidos neste trabalho estão de acordo com a condição redox e com os parâmetros físico-químicos determinados no período de coleta. A predominância do isoprenoide fitano em relação ao pristano, assim como os valores da razão atômica C/S menores que 2,8 ao longo do testemunho são indicativos das condições redutoras no local. DOI: 10.5935/1984-6835.20120036Geochemical biomarkers and the elemental composition were evaluated in order to determine the sources of organic matter (OM) in an anoxic environment region of Conceição Lagoon (SC). A sediment core (54 cm depth) was collected at a representative point of the anoxic region and analyzed, after fractionation and derivatization when necessary, by gas chromatography with flame ionization detector (GC-FID) and mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Geochemical biomarkers such as hydrocarbons, alkanols and sterols were detected in the subsections along the core. The atomic C/N ratio associated with the distribution of homologs of each class of biomarkers allowed us to infer that the extractable sedimentary OM is derived from several sources, such as terrestrial plants, bacterial debris and algae. Based on the hierarchical analysis the effect of the process of eutrophication and changing sources of OM in the various depth intervals of the core were evaluated. The results obtained by means of geochronological timing with the radionuclide 210Pb confirmed that the major proportion of autochthonous biomarkers at greater depths is related to higher productivity that the environment presented in the past rather than high sedimentation/preservation rate. The results of this study are consistent with the redox conditions and the physico-chemical parameters obtained during the collection time. The predominant isoprenoid pristane relative to phytane as well as the atomic C/S ratio values < 2.8 along the core are indicative of anoxic conditions. DOI: 10.5935/1984-6835.2012003
