urbanization process observed mainly in larger cities, and imply risk and vulnerability situations that can materialize as disasters. In this scenario, researchers’ worries are turning to studies that contribute to the implementation of policies that aim to reduce or relieve the risks of these populations’ everyday lives, as well as their vulnerabilities. Hence, the present study proposes a discussion about the conceptual aspects concerning risk, social vulnerability and disaster, and how they are correlated, also aiming to clarify the misconceptions that permeate this theme. It also stresses the importance of risk perception in the urban context as an important tool in risk reduction, thus aiming to contribute with theoretical questions that involve this emerging science, risk studying, which is so important to our daily lives, as well as to people’s life quality in the future.
