Mastitis is an inflammation of the mammary gland that consequently entails physical-chemical and microbiological changes in milk and mammary gland tissue. The study‟s objectives were to investigate the occurrence of mastitis in sheep of different breeds and determine the most frequent etiologic agents. Microbial identification was carried out according to morphotinctorial and biochemical characteristics belonging to microorganisms. 911 breasts belonging to 262 sheep were analyzed, of which at 140 (15.4%) microorganisms were isolated. The microorganisms most frequently were coagulase negative Staphylococci (CNS) (10.1%), followed by Streptococcus spp. (2.1%), Enterobacteriaceae (0.9%), associations of micro-organisms (0.9%), Corynebacterium spp. (0.7%), coagulase positive Staphylococci (CPS) (0.5%) and Staphylococcus aureus (0.2%). It was observed that the most affected breed was Santa Ines and the most common etiologic agents were coagulase negative Staphylococci.
