A Leprosy Control Programme has been in operation in the ent i re twin i sland country of Trinidad and Tobago for I I years. During the I I years of the Programme, the number of new cases of leprosy diagnosed in chi ldren aged from 0 to 1 4 years decreased from 65 patients i n the th i rd year of the Programme to 3 in both the 1 0th and 1 1 th years of operat ion . The epidemiology of leprosy in Trinidad and Tobago d uring these I I years i s described . The success of this Programme is credi ted to : I , the decis ions by the Government of Trinidad and Tobago in 1 968 to close the leprosarium and to set up a Leprosy Control Programme; 2, the recru itment and training of qua l ified personnel ; 3, active patient identification and aggressive t reatment and fol l ow-up of infect ious patients ; and 4, the assistance of a vibrant voluntary organizat ion in provid ing socio-economic assistance for pat ients and in educating the publ ic .
