The riparian forests are forest formations that accompany the water courses and are part of the physical structure of the river basins. Studies of this flora are important to form the basis in the management and planning of water resources. The floristic survey of trees and shrubs was realized and ecological distribution was observed in fragments of riparian forests of the Arroio Pelotas basin, southern Brazil. Sampling was performed by walking in 10 forest fragments. A total of 106 species were collected, distributed in 80 genera and 44 botanical families. The largest family was Myrtaceae with 14 species of plants and other families rich in species Euphorbiaceae, Asteraceae and Salicaceae. Most species inhabit the interior of forest fragments. The riparian forests of Arroio Pelotas comprise about 20% of the tree species of Rio Grande do Sul and the absence of the Inga genus stands out in the samplings. The vegetation comprises two phytogeographic regions. In both there are significant environmental impacts that must be considered in the sustainable management of regional water resources. For the conservation of the riparian forests it is necessary the isolation of the existing remnants and the forest recovery of riparian areas degraded by the anthropic activity.
