Este trabalho discute os processos de variação linguística em nomes próprios de lugares numa perspectiva diacrônica. Considerando que, nas denominações geográficas, as variantes costumam ocorrer nos níveis lexicais e grafo-fonéticos, tal debate assinala algumas especificidades em relação a corpora toponímicos históricos, especialmente ao descrever e analisar topônimos sergipenses coletados em cartas de sesmarias da capitania de Sergipe Del Rey dos séculos XVI e XVII. Além disso, advoga-se pelo estabelecimento filológico de corpora dessa natureza, para que o tratamento toponímico esteja isento de afirmações fantasiosas.
