L'initiative de la Public Library of Science (PLoS) s'inscrit dans le mouvement pronant le libre acces a la litterature scientifique sur l'internet, contre la mainmise des editeurs commerciaux. L'accueil du premier numero de PLoS Biology a ete tres positif. La tendance au libre acces gagne du terrain et de telles initiatives favorisent la transition vers un systeme d'edition en acces libre solide, equitable et soutenu que beaucoup dans la communaute scientifique reclament.
