In 1985 the research libraries at Northwestern University, the University of Chicago, and the University of Illinois at Chicago launched a Professional Development Program to address concerns about integrating younger, newer professional staff members into the complex structure of large research libraries and encouraging them to look broadly at the issues facing these libraries. The authors conducted a survey of the program's Feffows to determine how well the program is meeting its goals and the effectiveness of the program in training librarians for success within academic librarianship
