The purpose of this study was to determine the current length of service among library directors at ARL and non-ARL libraries as well as to compare the findings with similar investigations completed in the early 1970s. In addition to tenure data, the survey $ought responses on gender, ethnic background, position titles, internal promotion, professional experience, degrees, and retirement and resignation information. The results indicate that the average tenure period for university library directors has been slowly rising since the mid-1970s. This contrasts with earlier predictions that library directors would serve for shorter terms in the future because of continued difficult internal and external problems.
