Summary In this work, the adhesion of Sptreptococcus mutans onto different hydroxyapatite samples in a synthetic oral solution is assessed. Microbial adhesion was determined indirectly, by counting the viable microorganisms in suspensions equilibrated with the substrates. The results show that, a low inoculum concentration, adhesion may be reasonably described by a single Langmuir isotherm, if a small correction is introduced to account for the differences in macrorugosity. The affinity constant was found to be ca. 0.25´10 -8 (bacteria/mL) -1 . The lack of influence of the substrate is interpreted in terms of the adsorption mechanisms for S. mutans, and the large bacterial size, that conceals chemical and morphological differences in the surfaces, at the nanoscale. These results suggest that surface derivatization, using large polymers, may be a more useful way to modify bacterial adhesion. At high inoculum concentrations, multilayer adhesion is triggered; this type of adhesion is described by a modified Hill equation, with a coefficient n = 3, indicating strong attractive interactions among bacteria.
