Online social networks (Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, Twitter,…) have become truly significant new phenomena in humancommunication and interaction patterns and may have a profoundimpact in the way people communicate and connect with eachother. Millions of contemporary young adults use socialnetworking sites. Teenagers are among the most prolific usersof social network sites (SNS). Emerging studies find that youthspend a considerable amount of time in their daily lifeinteracting through social media. Subsequently, questions andcontroversies emerge about the effects SNS have on adolescentdevelopment. However, little is known about how much, why, andhow they use these sites. In this study, 561 universitystudents from different nationalities completed a survey thathelps clarify these questions that surround youth participationin these online communities. Our findings suggest that socialnetworks are the modus operandi of the new generation and thatFacebook is mostly used to keep up to date. In addition, astrong connection was found between Facebook use and theaddiction to maintaining social capital.
