Killed C. albicans have molecules (proteins and glycoproteins) on the cell surface that are immunogenic or have the ability of stimulating immune response against various form of Candidiasis for the immunotherapeutic purposes. This molecules are first recognized by the host immune system and subsequently stimulate a series of mechanisms that elicit immune cells responsible for attacking the killed C. albicans with an initiation of the white blood cells as the first line of defense against the already killed microbe. Some of the dead cells are engulfed by phagocytic cells and digested. Others are presented by Antigen Presenting Cells to lymphocytes which are stimulated by the secretion of cytokines, chemokines and complement factors to synergistically neutralize and digest the debris. This primary response activates memory cells that produce substantial amount of immune cells to better attack a viable C. albicans upon a secondary encounter. Therefore, this is an immune-based prophylactic strategy to prevent C. albicans infection.
