Laminitis and laminitis-related claw disorders are prevalent in zero-grazed dairy cows. Confinement of cows in zero-grazed units limits their movement and influences size and shape of claws. Abnormal size and shape of claws causes imbalanced body weight distribution on cows’ claws against the ground. The objective of this study was to determine macroscopic disorders on dairy cow claws, and radiographic features as well as histopathologic changes of claws with laminitis/laminitis-related disorders. A total of 159 dairy cow forelimb and hind limb feet (318 claws) were collected from slaughtered dairy cows. The claws were washed, examined macroscopically and radiographically. Sagittal sections were made through each claw, corium tissues were harvested for histopathology. Macroscopic disorders observed were: sole bruising (erosion), varied claw deformities, heel erosion, subclinical laminitis by presence of sole haemorrhages, double soles, chronic laminitis and white line separation. Radiographic changes on pedal bone were dilated vascular channels in claws with laminitis, irregular margins, exostoses, narrowing and osteolysis. Histopathologic changes in the corium of the sole included arterio-venous shunts, vascular wall rupture and thickening, thrombosis, oedema, degeneration, haemorrhages and spongiosis. Macroscopic, radiographic and histopathologic structural changes within the claws indicated irreversible changes and consequently poor prognoses for the affected dairy cows.
