The recent introduction of Chikungunya and Zika virus and their subsequent dispersion in the Americas have encouraged the use of novel technologies for adult Aedes surveillance to improve vector control. New vector surveillance platforms have been developed and shown to reduce arboviral disease cases in several Brazilian cities. The technologies consist of a low-cost (less than US$ 1.00/person/year) integration of continuous vector surveillance and the weekly generation of vector indices discernible within a Geographic Information System environment. These citywide vector surveillance technologies detect high Aedes infestation areas and facilitate the identification of arbovirus-infected trapped mosquitoes. Once identified, vector control actions can be prioritized to the hot spot areas and reduce future virus transmission. The technologies also provide data to model the role of climate on the vector population dynamics, to describe associations between climate and arbovirosis, and ultimately to predict and simulate outbreaks using vector and climate variables.
