Image processing is the use of computer algorithms to perform operations on an image in order to extract some useful information or further improve its quality. It provides engineers and scientists with effective tools for image analysis and visualization and is, nowadays, a thriving research field with a strong impact on the medical device industry. Image processing is, at the present, an important and dynamic part of computer science. Due to the use of always more and more high performance clinical devices, huge quantity of clinical images is generated. This rapid growth in medical images can be seen in an increasing number of software and hardware products in the market. Nevertheless, extracting useful information from images for diagnosis as well as integrating information from different data sources, is still a complex task. Images processing techniques is used to support diagnosis as well as response therapies for several chronic diseases. Computational platforms and clinical devices generate high quality life related images allowing to study and analyze health related issues. E.g., PET, TAC, MARI, as well as microscopy techniques are transversal to many different (daily) real life applications: face recognition and pattern identification are for instance used in security managing, as well as for images classification. This chapter will survey on different images techniques used in biomedical data and on toolkits for medical imaging.
