The surface tension gradient can be resulted from releasing a surfactant from the liquid film or feeding a vapor into the liquid film. The fluid disturbance in the interface is induced by this surface tension gradient. The flowing phenomena are usually termed as the Marangoni effect or the surface tension effect, and it will enhance the degree of interfacial disturbance and increase the mass transfer rate. The objective of this study is to apply the concept of Marangoni effect in the process of water vapors absorbed by the liquid film of triethylene glycol (TEG) solution and to analysis the mass transfer behaviors with and without the adding of surfactants in the liquid film. The interfacial disturbance resulted from the surface tension difference between surfactant and TEG solutions were considered in this study and the Marangoni effect was applied to discuss the mass transfer behaviors of the absorber to elucidate the influence of interfacial disturbance on packed towers. It was observed that the trends of mass transfer rates could be increased significantly as the surfactant added into the absorption system. The experimental mass transfer rates of the water vapors absorption into the TEG solutions in different operating conditions were reported in this study. Feeding a vapor or adding a surfactant with lower surface tension and/or higher volatility to the liquid will result in the surface tension gradient on the gas-liquid interface. The induced flowing disturbance will lead to the increasing of mass transfer rate for a gas-liquid contact system.
