This study presents the concern for sewage management in all over the world. It is a fact that the need for infrastructure and services has expanded as a result of urbanization. According to a report recently released by United Nation, world’s population hit 8 billion and it is expected to be 8.5 billion by 2030. The pressure that this sharp increase in population is putting on the sewage system is causing water contamination and the emergence of sewage-related ailments. The on-site sanitary facilities are inadequate, and the waterborne sewerage currently in use is outdated and in poor condition. Many areas are thought to be affected by diseases like Typhoid, Cholera, Diarrhea, and Malaria as a result of poor sewage management causing freshwater contamination. Most aquatic ecosystems worldwide have been contaminated by untreated domestic sewage/wastewater, mining waste, industrial wastewater, agricultural waste, and other contaminants. Surface water bodies, sewage drainage systems, surface water, and groundwater care getting contaminated by the discharge of untreated or just partially treated sewage water. These urban discharges contain a preponderance of nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients, which increase the likelihood of eutrophication-related issues for the receiving water bodies. Various sewage disposal methods have been discussed in this paper which is used by different nations but those methods are somewhere not satisfying in terms of sustainability. Therefore, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have been proposed by United Nation (2015) in response to the acknowledged need for sustainability and the clearly visible effects of pollution as well as population increment and these goals include sustainability objectives for water and sanitation (SDG 6). According to UN 2018, SDG 6 (SDG 6.1 and SDG 6.2) is focused on ensuring that everyone has equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene. SDG 6 also includes goals to enhance water quality (SDG 6.3), increase water usage efficiency (SDG 6.4), develop integrated water resources management (IWRM) (SDG 6.5), and restore aquatic ecosystems (SDG 6.6). Sustainable Development Goal 6 has been discussed more in detail in this article. The conclusion achieved is that more work needs to be done to ensure efficient sewage disposal , which will reduce the detrimental effects on the environment and public health caused by the majority of sewage disposal techniques. Also, there is need to emphasize more upon SDGs in order to protect the environment in a sustainable way.
