Financial inclusion has been presented in some global policy documents, for instance, the Universal Financial Access 2020, as an instrument of poverty eradication in the developing world. Financial inclusion promises to enhance poor families' ability to minimize financial shocks, undertake human capital investments in health and education and/or engage in modest asset accumulation in order to take advantage of promising investment opportunities in their economies. This chapter describes the role of mobile money and digital payments in financial inclusion for the realization of Sustainable Development Goals in Africa.  During the COVID-19 pandemic era, mobile money and digital payments kept people connected by delivering vital financial support and providing safe, socially distanced or no-contact ways to pay for food, electricity and other essentials of life. Notwithstanding the merits of both mobile money and digital payments for financial inclusion, it should be noted that financial inclusion alone, will not provide the poorest segments of African populations with the requisite skills and competences they need to find pathways out of poverty. For this reason, inclusive finance must endeavor to strengthen individuals' control over their lived situations and reinforce their beliefs in their personal efficacy to pull them out of poverty.

Role of Mobile Money and Digital Payments in Financial Inclusion for Sustainable Development Goals in Africa
