Antioxidants are substances that neutralize free radicals or their actions. Nature has endowed each cell with adequate protective mechanisms against any harmful effects of free radicals: superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, thioredoxin, thiols and disulphide bonding are buffering systems in every cell. The relation between free radicals and disease can be explained by the concept of “Oxidative stress”.All biological molecules present in our body are at risk of being attacked by free radicals. Such damaged molecules can impair the cell functions and even lead to cell death eventually resulting in disease states. Antioxidants may prevent and improve different diseased states. Several investigators have demonstrated the positive effects of antioxidants like Vitamin C, E to name a few in both preclinical and clinical setup.
